5 Simple Steps to Start A Lifestyle Blog

Lifestyle blogging can be a hit or miss, since its a broad type of blogging niche. Some might claim that a ‘lifestyle blog’ is not a niche. And I get their point. It’s so broad that you can get lost, and the whole point of the blog would be vague and pointless.

According to Mediakix.com:

A lifestyle blog is best defined as a digital content representation of its author’s everyday life and interests. A lifestyle blogger creates content inspired and curated by their personal interests and daily activities. As such, lifestyle blogs are oftentimes highly personalized to the author’s location, life stage and experience. For instance, a former food magazine editor, married, in her mid-30s with a 1-yr old child residing in Nantucket will blog on vastly different categories than a single, 24-yr old lifestyle blogger living in San Diego, who designs bikinis for work. Both are considered lifestyle bloggers, but there will be little if no overlay in their lifestyle blog content.

Find Your Niche

Probably the biggest mistake that I have ever made in my blogging life is figuring out my ‘niche,’ my specialty. For someone who has several interests, finding something that I would genuinely focus on was extremely difficult.

But with lifestyle blogging, the trick is to find one sole-focus of the blog alongside your lifestyle recommendations. For example, you can talk about your life and product recommendations (lifestyle) but give special focus on Travel. Likewise, you can do lifestyle recommendation while giving special focus on a specific skill like Sewing, Crocheting, or Knitting.

Doing this gives your blog some sort of authority compare to the rest. If you do this correctly, you will have posts that will rank in search engine in no time and not get lost in the World Wide Web.

Coin up a Domain Name

Once you identify your niche, it’s time to coin up a domain name.

Here’s a pretty clear definition of what a domain name is:

Domain names are used to identify one or more IP addresses. For example, the domain name microsoft.com represents about a dozen IP addresses. Domain names are used in URLs to identify particular Web pages. For example, in the URL http://www.pcwebopedia.com/index.html, the domain name is pcwebopedia.com.

Every domain name has a suffix that indicates which top level domain (TLD) it belongs to. There are only a limited number of such domains. For example:

gov – Government agencies

edu – Educational institutions

org – Organizations (nonprofit)

mil – Military

com – commercial business

net – Network organizations

ca – Canada

th – Thailand

Because the Internet is based on IP addresses, not domain names, every Web server requires a Domain Name System (DNS) server to translate domain names into IP addresses.

Choosing a unique, easy to remember domain name is important, because it will be your name on the WWW – and it has be professional yet, uniquely you.

Choose your Platform.

For starters, you can go with free blogging platform, like Blogger.com or WordPress.com. I made a basic comparision here that you can check out.

Some sites that offer free trials are Squarespace.com, and Wix.com, both offer drag and drop customization for ease of use, are a good place to start as well.

If you want to go the professional way, do self-hosting. You may do so but picking out good hosting can be tricky. A web hosting usually comes with free domain name registration so you can manage your domain name and host it on one website.

There are a lot of good hosting site and it can get overwhelming. So here is a good site comparison blog post you can check out if you are considering self-hosting: Best Hosting Site by Digital.com

Choose a Professional Looking Theme

Whatever platform you choose, it is likely that it comes with free professional-looking templates. Choose one that reflects your personal style but keep it on the professional standard.

Look at your favorite lifestyle bloggers and study their blog layouts. You can easily imitate them by modifying the free templates available on your platform.

Make it your own, but make it professional. After all, this will be your face in the whole world wide web.

Write Quality Content

Lifestyle Blogging, as well as all forms of blogging, is all about your content. Producing high-quality content is crucial in driving traffic to your site.

No content means no traffic. That simple.

If you’re having trouble figuring out what to write, I published some tips and prompts on how to kick start your content writing, which you can read here.

Starting a blog shouldn’t be that hard and confusing. As with anything in life, starting small is already a big step toward your dream. If you really want to do it, there is always a way.
